Even as a child, Gary Mirabelle was fascinated with sculpture, admiring the works of Michaelangelo.After formal art training, he modeled toy prototypes from clay and worked as a head sculptor for an architectural restoration firm.As a sideline, he produced realistic special effects for low-budget, feature films.



Mirabelle earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1976 from the State University of New York at New Paltz with his concentration in sculpture.Mirabelle also carried out a teaching assistantship from 1976-1978 at The Arts Students League for sculpture and drawing.



Gary Mirabelle’s work has been tagged as photo-realism or even hyper-realism.Yet, it is emotional insights and wry, satirical wit that sets his work apart from the others.Often, after several minutes, observers of his work begin speculating whether the character is real or not.Little do they realize that it’s one of Mirabelle’s life-like sculptures.Those inclined to step forward and search for a flaw that breaks the fantasy will find none.



The sculptures are modeled from clay, then cast in resin. By exaggerating the mouth or a particular gesture Mirabelle is able to breathe life into his work.In fact, many of his life-scale sculptures lean toward caricatures.They are satirical and make social statements.Yet, he closes the distance by pulling emotional strings.Much of the artist’s inspiration comes from his present life in New York City and youth spent in suburbia.



Working as a full-time sculptor in his Tribeca studio fulfills a life-long dream for Mirabelle.
